In a previous post, we discussed potential hazards for long weekend driving.
During the week of May 13-19, 2014, the OPP has launched an enforcement and education campaign as part of Canada Road Safety Week.
The campaign is a police initiated initiative to remind drivers that education about safe driving is a priority and that an essential party of the role of the police is to enforce laws to save lives and reduce injuries on Canada’s roadways.
Road Safety Week targets the “big four” driver offenses: drunk/impaired driving, distracted driving, aggressive driving and failure to wear seatbelts. These are the behaviours that put drivers, passengers and other road users at risk.
The OPP revealed that distracted driving caused more deaths than impaired driving in 2013.
Recently, the fine for distracted driving increased to $280 in Ontario in an effort to help thwart distracted driving.
Canada Road Safety Week is put on by Transport Canada and the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police and is part of Canada’s Road Safety Strategy 2015. Canada’s Road Safety Strategy is a plan to make Canada’s roads the safest in the world.
