As with every long weekend, the Ontario Provincial Police ask for drivers to be responsible.
According to a recent article from The Windsor Star, provincial police are bracing themselves for what they call one of the most dangerous weekends of the summer. Victoria Day Weekend is the first long weekend of the summer/cottage season and is associated with busier highways. Many people are heading up to cottages or making use of the highways over the long weekend.
The OPP have particular concerns for motorcycle safety and the rising number of motorcycle fatalities that can happen over a long weekend. They have concerns about the rising number of off-road vehicle deaths and motorcycle deaths. The OPP are urging motorcycle riders to wear helmets and drive sober.
Motorists can expect an increased police presence during the long weekend.
The OPP are also encouraging boating safety and encourage everyone to practice safe boating. First and foremost, anyone on a boat should be wearing a life jacket. The OPP suggest monitoring weather conditions and letting a friend or relative know your planned route and duration of your trip, in the event of an emergency.
