How Mild Is a Mild Traumatic Brain Injury?

A traumatic brain injury can happen as a result of a car accident, a slip and fall accident, a fall from a bicycle, a sports accident or an assault. It can happen to a driver, a cyclist, a pedestrian or an athlete.

A new study published in the journal, Neurology, revealed that there is a definitive neurobiological link between cognitive dysfunction and white matter injury after mild or moderate traumatic brain injury.

The study, emanating from the United Kingdom, focused on 53 people with traumatic brain injuries; 44 had a mild traumatic brain injury and 9 people had a moderate traumatic brain injury and they were compared to 33 people with no history of brain injury.

As part of the study, all of the participants participated in tests that would demonstrate their thinking and memory skills, while undergoing a special type of MRI scan used to detect damage to brain cells and see the regions of the brain connect.

The participants with traumatic brain injuries underwent the MRI scans approximately 6 days after their injuries. The researchers had 23 of those participants repeat the scans and testing one year later.

The study concluded that in comparison to those participants without brain injuries, the MRIs of those with brain injuries revealed damage in white matter and the process that allow brain cells transmit messages to each other.

The study also showed these participants had lower scores on the cognitive testing, consistent with damage to white matter.

The results of this research are important as many studies focus on severe traumatic brain injuries. The injuries sustained by this study’s participants occurred as a result of common accidents including low speed collisions and falling off a bicycle.

A traumatic brain injury, whether mild or severe, can have long lasting effects. It is important to address the symptoms and seek proper medical attention.
